Mind your Language

Sitting listening to a comedy programme on radio 4, this revelation, which i paraphrase………

“A local council has decided to stop using the word brainstorm in case it offends the mentally unstable”

It would take a comedy programme to enjoy that one.

Language? Oh yes that’s the one that gets the anti-PC brigade whining isn’t it. Soon we won’t be able to say boo to a goose. Excuse me but who would want to say boo to a goose? Why frighten the animals?

On this blog i hope to share and have fun with issues around the language of disability but here’s some serious starters…..

  • Disability means discrimination on the basis of impairment
  • Disability or discrimination on the basis of impairment is a social construction
  • Disabled People are those people who are discriminated against on the basis of their impairment by society
  • Society? That’s you that is.
  • You. You are the person who discriminates against disabled people on the basis of their discrimination
  • You, the person who discriminates against disabled people on the basis of their impairment do it by constructing barriers.
  • Barriers the things you put up to stop disabled people getting in
  • Barriers the things you put up with your attitudes, the way you go about constructing the environment and the way you organise everything about you just so you can stay immune to the risk of catching an impairment
  • You, the barriers you build, we recognise you and your discriminating ways through the language you use.

There there. Nevermind. Isn’t it a pity. I rise the flag. I see its slogan. Piss on pity.
